Motorola Droid 2 World Edition Gets Pictured Sporting Sleek New Paint Job

The Motorola Droid was one of the first Android powered handsets to really make a mark on society. It wasn’t the first Android smartphone as those honors are reserved for the T-Mobile G1 but it was certainly the hardest hitting device since the G1. Capitalizing on the success of this device, Motorola went ahead and released a Droid 2 which features a sleeker form factor alongside slightly beefed up specs.

While this device is currently only available for Verizon, Motorola is looking to expand that worldwide with their Droid 2 World Edition. Today, the device was pictured with a brand new paint job – something we’ve never seen before, as you can see above.

Unfortunately, there’s not much different between the Droid 2 World Edition and the regular Droid 2 but if you’re going out of the country but still want a capable Android powered handset by your side, this is definitely a good choice.

Sprint outs EVO 4G and Hero updates, EVO framerate cap might be solved

Last time we checked in on this problem, HTC had said that the EVO 4G’s 30fps cap on video output simply couldn’t be increased — but it seems the latest firmware update might prove otherwise. We’ve got a couple screen shots showing details of the latest upgrades for both the EVO and the Hero; in the latter case, you’ve just got a couple bug fixes, but the EVO’s list includes a total of four: the nasty calendar issue, the 30fps fix, a reboot problem involving GPS, and multiple Gmail sync that was busted in the Froyo update. Interestingly, Sprint’s official changelog only mentions the calendar and Gmail sync fixes, so it’s possible they’re trying to keep the other two low-key to prevent undue questions and curiosity from folks as they upgrade. What’s everyone seeing out there?

Michael Dell teases new 7-inch Android tablet, says Streak to land in Best Buy next month (update: pic)

Oh Michael, such a teaser you are. Word has it that the head honcho of Dell Inc. has just pulled out yet another Android tablet from his pocket, only this time it’s a 7-inch whopper. Sadly, Mr. Dell left us high and dry with dates and specs (and the lack of photos from the event doesn’t help, either), but we’ll bet you that this is the long-rumored Looking Glass. On a more solid note, Dell also announced that the smaller Streak is heading to Best Buy next month. That’s great, except some of us would rather see the tabletphone getting its share of Froyo sooner — here’s hoping that this bigger tablet won’t disappoint us with an outdated OS.

Update: As it just so happens, Reuters snapped a pic of Mr. Dell himself holding the tablet on stage, and sure enough, it resembles that leaked Looking Glass even from quite a distance away.

LG Vortex for Verizon in the wild?

It might be a little early to cue the “vortex of suck” jokes, but this spy shot definitely says it all: the phone — claimed to be called Vortex — is decidedly on the lower end of Verizon’s Android spectrum. The Droid Guy, source of the photo, says that the specs include a 600MHz core, 3.2-inch display, FM radio, and Froyo; that basically matches up with the recently-announced Optimus One’s spec sheet, and considering the similarity in industrial design, it’s reasonable to follow the site’s conclusion that this little more than a CDMA port of the device. To be fair, the Android handsets in Verizon’s present-day lineup are definitely weighted toward the pricey side, so phones like this and the Motorola WX445 should help balance things out a smidge when (and if) they ultimately end up launching.

Is this the Droid 2 World Edition / Droid Pro?

If you look quickly, you might not be able to tell that there’s any difference between this thing and the Droid 2 that you can go out and buy today, but this thing is all about subtlety — after all, the only obvious internal change is that it can be used globally. Droid Life claims that we’re looking at the Droid 2 World Edition (or Droid Pro, or whatever the heck it’s called), featuring a pearly white back and a lighter chrome bezel up front; current rumors suggest that this might replace the original Droid 2 altogether, but it’s anybody’s guess until we see some official information. The site is also reporting that the OMAP3630 core seems to be clocked up to 1.2GHz — the plain ol’ Droid 2 settles for a measly 1GHz. All told, this is shaping up to be one of the quickest product revisions in smartphone history, so let’s hope Verizon has the decency to put some sort of upgrade program in place for early adopters.

Android device and NES controller

Posted by TiPb Store on September 4th, 2010

I’m sure that all old school gamers will appreciate this. It is essentially an NES controller modded onto an Android powered device. And you thought the Wiimote with Android was cool.

It takes a while before you see him actually get to play Super Mario Brothers 3, and it makes me wonder how he got it on there in the first place. To get the NES controller on there, he used a breakout board, Arduino, and a blueSMIRF module. This is much more Super Mario Brothers than you would get from the Live Wallpaper.

I would love to see more applications like this.
