Michael Dell teases new 7-inch Android tablet, says Streak to land in Best Buy next month (update: pic)

Oh Michael, such a teaser you are. Word has it that the head honcho of Dell Inc. has just pulled out yet another Android tablet from his pocket, only this time it’s a 7-inch whopper. Sadly, Mr. Dell left us high and dry with dates and specs (and the lack of photos from the event doesn’t help, either), but we’ll bet you that this is the long-rumored Looking Glass. On a more solid note, Dell also announced that the smaller Streak is heading to Best Buy next month. That’s great, except some of us would rather see the tabletphone getting its share of Froyo sooner — here’s hoping that this bigger tablet won’t disappoint us with an outdated OS.

Update: As it just so happens, Reuters snapped a pic of Mr. Dell himself holding the tablet on stage, and sure enough, it resembles that leaked Looking Glass even from quite a distance away.

Android device and NES controller

I’m sure that all old school gamers will appreciate this. It is essentially an NES controller modded onto an Android powered device. And you thought the Wiimote with Android was cool.

It takes a while before you see him actually get to play Super Mario Brothers 3, and it makes me wonder how he got it on there in the first place. To get the NES controller on there, he used a breakout board, Arduino, and a blueSMIRF module. This is much more Super Mario Brothers than you would get from the Live Wallpaper.

I would love to see more applications like this.

Camangi announces two Android tablets

It has been a while since we reported on Camangi and its Webstation. They are now working on two Android-powered tablets that look like they are in competition with the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The tablets in question are the Camangi II and the FM600, but not much is known of the sequel to the Camangi. Here is what we know about the FM600.

It has a 600MHz Qualcomm processor, 7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display, 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi b/g, VGA front-facing camera, 3 Megapixel rear-facing camera, accelerometer, compass, and SIM card slot.

I don’t have a price of availability date on these as yet.

Rydeen creates its own Android tablet

We have seen a lot of Android tablets come out in the last few days, from companies like Camangi and For You Digital. Clearly, someone wants to compete with the Galaxy Tab.

I have never heard of Rydeen Mobile, but it has created a 7-inch Android tablet that is essentially a “gPad” GCOM701. It has an 800 MHz ARMADA 166 SOC, 256MB of RAM, micro-SD storage slot, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, mini and non-mini USB ports, front facing camera, as well as 2400mAh battery for six hours of use.

I believe that this is slated for a November release.

Android accounts for one-quarter of mobile web traffic, says Quantcast

It’s terribly difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary drastically depending upon whom you ask, but if you’re inclined to believe that Android is mopping up Apple and RIM’s declining mobile mindshare in the US, you’ll find nothing but corroboration from Quantcast. The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google’s OS, though it’s important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don’t include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here — these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps — and since we’re on a roll with the disclaimers, let’s just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company’s financial success. Nokia can attest to that.

On My Way, for iPhone and Android

Have you ever been waiting for someone, and wonder where in the world he or she is? Well, with this TeleNav App known as On My Way, you would know.

All you have to do is set it up, and On My Way notifies another person with status messages while you are en route. It will automatically tell the other person while you will be late, and even set a pre-determined time when you will arrive. Now just try and come up with a valid reason for texting while driving.

On My Way is available for both iPhone and Android.

StumbleUpon comes to Android, too

Some of you might remember when we covered StumbleUpon for the iPhone, and Android users will be pleased to know it is coming to the Android platform.

StumbleUpon is an Internet social bookmarking site that I probably don’t need to go on about. Most people use it online at their desktop or laptop, but this mobile version for Android looks like it should be easy to examine channels like Photos, News, Flickr, and YouTube, and you can share what you have found on your favorite social networking site such as Twitter and Facebook, not to mention good old-fashioned e-mail.

I’m not certain how much this costs, but I hope it is like the iPhone version: free.

State Farm on the Move for Android prevents texting while driving

Just earlier this week, we reported on SMS Replier for Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile platforms. It was a program for automating texting response messages.

State Farm, in an effort to keep their customer’s rates down, have created an Android App known as On The Move. It will automatically send a message of “I am driving” or any other pre-ordained response when an untimely text message is received.

Granted, it is not made so it will link up with an Android phone’s GPS so it won’t turn on automatically when it could sense that you are driving. The user does have to turn on this thing manually.

Still, it is a step in the right direction for preventing texting while driving.

Toshiba to Name Android Powered Tegra 2 Smart Pad The Folio 100?

Many competitors have already been brought to the tablet industry and Toshiba is one of them. It’s been known for a while that Toshiba would be releasing more than one tablet in the Smart Pad line up. However, there is one device in particular that is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor. This device is said to feature a capacitive touchscreen, front facing camera and everything else similar devices will have.

More specifically, a 10.1-inch screen with a 1024, 600 resolution, 16GB of built-in storage, 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, USO 2.0 and a 1.3 megapixel web cam.

However, while we know that it will feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 2, we do not know exactly what this device will be called. Today, we bring you rumors pointing towards Toshiba naming the device the Folio 100.

As always until Toshiba says more we’ll have to mark this one off as speculation.
